Listen to the tape then answer this question.Why did the man need a phrasebook?
聽錄音，然后回答問題。為什么這位男士需要一本常用語手冊?
Last week Mrs Mills went to London. She does not know London very well, and she lost her way.
上星期米爾斯夫人去了倫敦。她對倫敦不很熟悉，因此迷了路。
Suddenly, she saw a man near a bus-stop. “ I can ask him the way.” She said to herself.
突然，她在公共汽車站附近看到一個男人。“我可以向他問路，”她想。
“Excuse me,” she said.“Can you tell me the way to King Street please?”
“對不起，您能告訴我到國王街怎么走嗎?”她說。
The man smiled pleasantly. He did not understand English! He spoke German. He was a tourist.
這人友好地笑了笑。他不懂英語!他講德語。他是個旅游者。
Then he put his hand into his pocket, and took out a phrase-book.
然后他把手伸進了衣袋，掏出了一本常用語手冊。
He opened the book and found a phrase. He read the phrase slowly.
他翻開書找到了一條短語。他緩慢地讀著短語。
“I am sorry,” he said. “ I do not speak English.”
”很抱歉，“他說，”我不會講英語。”

1.She does not know London very well. 她對倫敦不很熟悉。
know…well這一短語意為"對……了解"。又如：
I don't know him very well.
我不太了解他。
2.…and she lost her way. …因此她迷路了。
句中的 and當"所以"講，表示結果。 lose one's way, 迷路。
3.ask(sb.) the way, (向某人)問路。
4.say to oneself, 心中暗想。
注意：talk to oneself意為"自言自語地說"。
5.Can you tell me the way to King Street, please? 您能告訴我到國王街怎么走嗎?
tell sb. the way(to), 告訴某人(去……的)路。
6.cut himself= cut his face。
以整體代替部分是英語中的一種修辭格，叫提喻(merism )。
語法 Grammar in use
1.副詞
副詞(adverb)這個詞的本意是補充動詞的意義。這就是許多副詞的作用。它們可以通過修飾動詞告訴我們有關句中某個動作的情況，也就是告訴我們某事是如何、何時、何地等發生或進行的。
副詞可以是單個的詞(如 slowly)或詞組(如 very well)。單一副詞既有以-ly結尾的.也有不以-ly結尾的(如 quickly, fast)。
形容詞向副詞的轉換一般遵循3個規則：
(1)在形容詞后面直接加-ly，如：
quick----quickly
hurried----hurriedly
pleasant----pleasantly
warm----warmly
(2)以-y結尾的形容詞，則把-y改成-i，再加-ly，如：
thirsty----thirstily
happy----happily
(3)形容詞與副詞形式相同：
late----late
fast----fast
hard----hard
well----well

1.lose v.
(1)迷失;(使)迷路：
She did not know London very well, and she lost her way.
她對倫敦不很熟悉，因此迷了路。
It's very easy to lose your way in a strange city.
在一個陌生的城市里，你很容易迷路。
(2)失去;喪失：
He lost his sight in a car accident.
他在一起汽車交通事故中失明了。
She has just lost her job because of carelessness.
她剛剛因疏忽大意而丟了工作。
(3)遺失;丟失：
I can't enter my house because I've lost my key on my way home.
我進不了自己的房子，因為在回家的路上我把鑰匙丟了。
We lost her in the crowd.
我們在人群中找不見她了。
2.understand v.
(1)理解;懂：
He doesn't understand English and you can try French.
他不懂英語，你可以試試法語。
I don't understand what you mean.
我不明白你的意思。
(2)明了;了解;得知：
How the machine works is still not fully understood.
這臺機器到底是如何運轉的仍未被完全弄清楚。
Only today have I begun to understand the political
situation in Northern Ireland.
直到今天我才了解了北愛爾蘭的政治局勢。
