　　The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most popular traditional festivalscelebrated in China, which is on the fifth of the fifth lunar month, also knownas Duanwu Festival. It’s said that it is to commemorate the death of a Chinesepatriotic poet, Qu Yuan, who was snared by corrupt officials in ancient Chinaand finally committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River to protestagainst them. The traditions and customs held on this festival differ from place toplace, but there are some common in them.

Forthousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zong zi (glutinousricewrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragonboats.

　　The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in thesouthern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes.Thisregattacommemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an honest minister who is said tohave committed suicide by drowning himself in a river. The dragon-boat racessymbolize the many attempts to rescue and recover Qu's body. A typical dragonboat ranges from 50-100 feet in length, with a beam of about 5.5 feet,accommodating two paddlers seated side by side.
