"Labor Day differs in every essential from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.

“五一”國際勞動節(jié)意義
中國人民慶祝勞動節(jié)活動可追溯至1918年。這一年，一些革命知識分子在上海、蘇州、杭州、漢口等地向群眾散發(fā)介紹“五一”傳單。
1920年5月1日大會現(xiàn)場 李大釗演講，1920年5月1日,北京、上海、廣州、九江、唐山等各工業(yè)城市工人群眾浩浩蕩蕩地走向街市、舉行了聲勢浩、集會。李大釗專門在《新青年》上發(fā)表了《“五一”運動史》，介紹“五一”節(jié)來歷和美法等國工人紀念“五一”活動，號召中國工人把這年“五一”作為覺醒日期。
陳獨秀也為慶祝這個節(jié)日發(fā)表了《上海厚生紗廠湖南女工問題》一文，揭露資本家剝削工人剩余價值真相。陳獨秀又在上海船務棧房工界聯(lián)合會作了《勞苦者覺悟》演說，闡明了“勞動創(chuàng)造世界”。“做工人最有用最貴重”觀點。在北京，一些青年外出宣傳，散發(fā)《五月一日勞工宣言》，喚起工人為反對剝削、爭取自身權利而斗爭。這是中國首次紀念“五一”國際勞動節(jié)活動，也是中國歷史上第一個“五一”勞動節(jié)。
