      Careers start out as a climbing exercise: When can I get promoted? How can I get a raise? What job will be more challenging than my current one?

      But for all but a tiny fraction of workers, that climb ends before their career does.

      Some people realize they don't enjoy working at higher levels of a company, or aren't very good at it. Others get this message from their boss. And some people decide they're not willing to make the tradeoffs required -- traveling more, or sacrificing family time -- to continue climbing the corporate ladder.

      Finding Your Place

      "Your ambition may naturally shift as you grow in your career," said Libby Pannwitt, principal of the Work Life Design Group in San Carlos, California. Sometimes the best response to this problem is to change companies, to find a place where you can keep climbing more comfortably. But what do you do when that's not the answer?

      The key is to find a way to keep work interesting and challenging. This will help you remain a valuable employee, which is important, since employers may be quick to lay off workers who no longer seem engaged. And you will be happier as well.

      "I don't know that we ever stop learning or needing to learn, and I don't think we ever stop growing," said Leslie Griffen, principal of The Griffen Group in Lee's Summit, Mo. Griffen does career and executive coaching and human capital management consulting.

      But for all but a tiny fraction of workers, that climb ends before their career does.

      即使你不能進(jìn)入高層工作,你仍然可以有辦法讓自己繼續(xù)成長,比如:

      Advancing in Different Ways  在其他方面取得進(jìn)步

      Career experts offer five tips for keeping your moving forward when you aren't moving up:

      職業(yè)專家們提供了一些建議,讓你在事業(yè)沒有高升的時候保持前進(jìn):

      * Acknowledge what you're giving up. 坦然面對你將會失去的。

      If you aren't moving to the next level, your salary will likely plateau. And if you thrive on the prestige that comes with your job, be prepared for that to level off as well.

      如果你不上一個臺階,那么你的收入也許會持平。而且如果你喜歡工作所帶來的名譽,那么也要對它停止變化做好準(zhǔn)備。

      * Appreciate what you're gaining. 欣賞你將要獲得的。

      A less stressful job brings many benefits. "Do I need to be king of the world at the expense of my family, my health, my happiness?" Pannwitt said.

      壓力少的工作會帶來很多好處。Pannwitt說:“我需要付出家庭、健康和幸福的代價來成為企業(yè)領(lǐng)袖嗎?”

      * Make a lateral move. 進(jìn)行平調(diào)。

      There are many ways to continue to learn and grow without moving up on the organizational chart. Sometimes this means taking a job in a different department in your company; other times you may simply be able to take on new projects in your current position. "Instead of climbing to the heights, aim at breadth and depth of your professional knowledge," Pannwitt said.

      有許多不用升遷而能繼續(xù)學(xué)習(xí)、成長的方式。比如在公司的不同部門工作;或者在當(dāng)前崗位上進(jìn)行新的項目。Pannwitt說:“不是往高處‘爬’,而是關(guān)注職業(yè)知識的寬度和深度。”

      * Delve deeper. 成為專家。

      Most organizations have some experts in specific areas whose experience may not be broad enough for the upper levels of management but who are nonetheless depended on and sought after for their expertise. "Strive to be the go-to person, known for your wisdom and knowledge," Pannwitt said.

      許多企業(yè)都有一些具體領(lǐng)域內(nèi)的專家。他們的經(jīng)驗也許不足以寬廣到來擔(dān)任高層管理,但卻一樣是公司要指靠的;他們的專長也是公司渴求的。“努力成為一位以智慧和知識聞名的頂梁柱,”Pannwitt建議。

      * Take your expertise outside.傳授你的技術(shù)。

      Teach adult education classes in your field. Offer to chair a committee for your professional association. Or use your expertise to help a volunteer organization -- as treasurer, for example, if you're in accounting. "Reach outside your career" to a related activity, Griffen said.

      把你熟知的領(lǐng)域內(nèi)的只是教授給接受教育的成人。主動擔(dān)任你所在行業(yè)協(xié)會的委員會主席。或用你的技能來幫助志愿者組織——例如:如果你在會計行業(yè),那么就擔(dān)任出納員。Griffen建議“走出你的工作”,參加到相關(guān)的活動中去。
