An Analysis of the Female Images in Their Eyes were Watching God
Abstract
The conventional depictions of African-American women in American fiction can be classified into three categories: Aunt Jemima or mammy, the black mistress and the tragic mulatto. None of these stereotypes is positive. In the progress of African-American woman images’ change, Zora Neale Hurston’ s work is transitional. It marks the beginning that the black woman image goes from stereotype to character.Their Eyes Were Watching God is Zora Neale Hurston’ s best known novel, In this novel, she breaks down the stereotype of inferior black woman and creates new black woman images. This novel establishes the framework for contemporary black feminist literary tradition.
This paper tries to analyze different woman images in the novel. Especially through Janie’s experience of shake off the bandage of both racial and sexual discrimination in her three marriages to search for her own voice, to explore the woman awakening in the man-controlled world and the woman’s outlet on the road to pursue their identity.

摘要
在美國小說中對黑人婦女的傳統描述大致可以分為3類：黑保姆，黑情婦和不幸的混血女郎，這些固定不變的黑人婦女形象沒有1個是正面的。在美國黑人小說女性形象嬗變中，佐拉•尼爾•赫斯頓的作品有著過渡性的作用，它標志著黑人婦女形象由固定模式轉向個性化。《他們的眼睛望著上帝》是赫斯頓最具有代表性的作品，在這部小說中，赫斯頓打破了卑賤的黑人婦女形象，塑造了全新的黑人女性形象，為當代黑人女性主義文學傳統奠定了框架。
本文通過對《他們的眼睛望著上帝中》中珍妮、南妮等女性形象的分析，特別是女主人公珍妮在她的3次婚姻中不斷的擺脫束縛與控制，尋找自己聲音的經歷，探討了處在邊緣地位的新黑人女性在男權及種族歧視社會的覺醒，以及在她們發現自我，追求自我的過程中的兩性關系和女性出路問題。
